Creative Travelogue: February ’23 Movie Illustrations

If we’re kind and polite the world will be alright.

Paddington, Paddington 2

The movie illustration saga continues! Our theme for February was my choice – Sequels. I really just wanted an excuse to see Rocky III. This month was actually so fun and filled with great movies we went a little overboard and watched all the Rocky movies and two Die Hard. Instead of creating images for each movie I made the series into a collage. By the end of the month we watched: Paddington 2, Rocky III, IV, V, and Rocky Balboa, Die Hard 2, 3, and The Good, The Bad and The Ugly.

Another fantastic movie month filled with a staggering 8 movies! Normally, we only watch one a week. Want to hear how much I love Rocky and how surprised I was to enjoy The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly? Check out the Laura’s Rambles February episode where Joe and I talk about each of the movies we watch. Now back to the illustrations!

movie illustrations for sequels month - paddington 2, rocky III, IV, V, and Balboa, Die Hard 2 & 3, the good the bad and the ugly
  • Paddington 2: Obviously I had to draw Paddington in his adorable pink-by-accident prison uniform. I included the marmalade sandwiches under his hat because I especially relate to always having snacks with me.
  • Rocky III, IV, V, Rocky Balboa: Unfortunately, at this stage of the Rocky series we are losing favorite characters left and right. The stopwatch and gold glove pendant all represent Mickey who we lost in Rocky III. The shorts represent Apollo Creed, who we lose in Rocky IV. Apollo gives them to Rocky for his match against Clubber Lange. The gold pendant is two-fold because Rocky gives the necklace to his son in Rocky V. Lastly, the rose is for Adrian. It broke my heart that she passed away and Rocky visits her grave every day in Rocky Balboa. They were #relationshipgoals. I could write a whole post about how much I love those two.
  • Die Hard 2 & 3: In Die Harder (Die Hard 2) the setting is a D.C. airport at Christmas time. So I made the background the airport tarmac, control tower, and a runaway plane. Die Hard with a Vengeance (Die Hard 3) took place in NY with a really down-and-out John McClane running around town with an unlikely partner solving riddles to prevent explosions throughout the city. I drew the bomb that was being used in the bottom left corner.
  • The Good, The Bad and The Ugly: This movie was so freaking good and I wasn’t expecting it. I drew the end scene when The Good, The Bad and The Ugly make it to the cemetery and find the gold. Blondie leaves Tuco hanging in a noose over the open grave as a call back to the scams they were running at the beginning of the movie.

Another great movie month. I joked I’ll just keep picking the Sequels theme for all my monthly theme picks. (I won’t, don’t worry…)

Any movies you would have recommended for Sequels month? Have you created any movie illustrations like this before? I’d love to hear from you in the comments below.

What is a Creative Travelogue?

All of us are travelers whether it’s in real life or to fictional places through books, movies, shows, or games. A Creative Travelogue is when you are so wrapped up in a place you went in real life or through media that you create artwork for it. This is an excellent way to revisit that place, keep your experiences alive, and be creative in the process.

Happy travels and stay creative,

Laura
